A popular annual conference on project management offices connects practitioners who can often feel isolated, helping them tackle common issues ranging from the strategic to tactical to managerial.

Jim Furfari works 6,500 feet above sea level as the head of the enterprise project office for Colorado Springs Utilities, but that’s not why he can sometimes feel a little isolated. Leading a project management office can be a tough gig — and it’s easy to feel your problems are unique.

Then he went to the 2008 PMO Symposium, where he discovered that more than 250 people struggled with the same issues.

"You really had a great opportunity to talk to peers across the country going through the same things you are,” he says. “It's better than taking out a book.”
