A new project management course at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers business students an opportunity to interact with geographically dispersed teams from 15 institutions and seven countries.

The ability to work with others from around the world has become an important skill for project management professionals to master as the business world becomes increasingly global. A new information technology course at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers business students an opportunity to interact with geographically dispersed teams and gain a better understanding of how to deal with the many challenges such work settings present.

"Virtual teams are increasingly becoming a ‘normal' mode of operation in business today," says UW-Whitewater professor Andy Ciganek, whose project management course is the first at the school to incorporate the concept of partially distributed teams or virtual teams.

The virtual teams consist of at least two subteams that are separated geographically. Ciganek assigns teams of four to five students who then pair up with students from another subteam at a distant university.
