The Quality Factor

When we talk about producing a “quality” product, what do we actually mean? Is it easy to use … fast enough … flexible? Does it consistently work the way we want and produce the results we expect? Here are some factors to consider when addressing the meaning of quality on your projects.
This is the fourth article in a series on best practices for managing change initiatives. However, instead of focusing on common, if still misunderstood, techniques such as business cases, risk management and change control, this series explores some lesser known and underused practices that can make a fundamental difference to the success of a project.
In many cases, lack of project success can be attributed, not to budget and schedule failures, but to oversights and omissions in the features, functions and capabilities delivered. The quality factor identifies the expected levels of performance for the planned change across the entire operating spectrum. The quality needs and expectations are used to shape the planned solution from the initial phases through to and after implementation.
The quality factors mentioned here have been adapted from the Quality Assurance Institute and other sources and provide a framework for analyzing and establishing stakeholder expectations and priorities on a number of critical fronts.
