How project portfolio management transformed the way the city of Tacoma delivers goods and services to its 200,000 residents.
When Bradd Busick came to work for the city of Tacoma, Washington, some three and half years ago, visibility into what everyone was working on was as clear as a fog rolling into Puget Sound.
“It was not uncommon for work to be put on an annual work plan and no one have an idea of whether it got done,” Busick says. “It was just a black hole.”
But if prior experience as a consultant taught him anything, it was this — if it can’t be measured, it’s not going to be managed.
Now a system of key department contacts — KDCs, they call them — exist across 25 units, gathering once a month to prioritize projects. In advance of that meeting, Busick’s team makes sure they have detailed information on all their projects so decision-making can come from the ground up.
