Our May 2009 Cool Tools roundup highlights some of the latest Agile-focused technology solutions and services for project management professionals and organizations.

Rally

New release gives development and project managers greater visibility into the overall status, quality and velocity of their Agile projects and programs.

Rally Software Development Corp. recently unveiled the latest release of its Agile application lifecycle management (ALM) solution. Rally release 2009.1 adds and updates a number of highly customizable reporting options while also increasing the number of free integrations with other development tools.

"Especially in this economy, organizations are constantly trying to improve workflow and shorten application development time," said Zach Nies, vice president of Products at Rally. "With these new features and our Platform-as-a-Service architecture, development teams are able to connect across silos and gain efficiency and time to market in ways that can dramatically lower costs."

New and enhanced reporting features and integrations available in 2009.1 include customizable release and iteration charts; enhanced velocity and burndown charts; enhanced scope change reports; andAgile EVM Mashup, which displays Agile Earned Value Management metrics.

In addition, the Rally Connector for Microsoft Visual Studio enables developers to see tasks and defects assigned to other team members or those without any owner assignment, and the Rally Connector for Jira supports multiple project mapping.

Two additional enhancements to Rally's award-winning Agile lifecycle applications are the highest voted features from its customer community: recycle bin functionality, which provides security over data loss and accidental changes by allowing users to restore user stories, tasks, defects and test cases after they are deleted, and screen capture tool enhancements, which allow users to annotate regions on the screen to provide more explanation on the screenshots they attach to defect reports in Rally.

Rally Enterprise recently received the Jolt Productivity Award in the Project Management Tools category, marking the fourth time Rally's Agile ALM solutions have received a Jolt award.
