Air Force to Austin
Kathleen Ryan O'Connor   (April 30, 2009)

The former senior vice president of program management for USAA is the new “executive in residence” at Planview, where he continues to help organizations marry IT results with business goals on a global scale. Here, he shares some lessons learned and advice for project managers.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. Project management at San Antonio-based USAA is no exception. Brad Rable, former senior vice president of program management for the highly regarded financial services firm, led a $500 million global software development organization executing more than 400 projects per year.

Described as a “visionary IT leader,” Rable is now bringing that expertise to Austin-based Planview, a leader in portfolio management, as the latest Planview Executive in Residence. Established in January 2007, the program is designed to bring top talent to deliver industry experience, expertise and customer insight to the organization. Rable joins Rich Murphy, the former IT CFO at Deutsche Bank; former AMR executive Randy Leiser; and former SGI CIO Sean Worthington, now with Cisco Systems, all alumni of the program.

Rable, 42, of New Braunfels, Texas, recently spoke with ProjectsatWork, touching on issues from how equations can't solve everything to the transparency every project manager should aspire to embody.

How did you get started in the field?
My first job was with Robbins Gioia, as a project manager, in support of the U.S.
