Critical Skills for IT Success

Business and relationship management skills are critical for IT career advancement, regardless of economic climate, according to the Society for Information Management.

A successful IT career begins and ends with business and relationship management skills. That’s the key conclusion of a recent white paper released by the Society for Information Management (SIM) called “The Information Technology Workforce: IT Provider Trends and Implications 2006-2009.” The paper is the second phase of research for a project that also explored the skills IT executives are seeking for their internal departments.

According to the study, critical IT provider skills include:

· Basic technology knowledge

· Project management capabilities

· Business domain knowledge

· Managing client relationships

This holds true regardless of type of employer or geography.
