You’ve got to actually like using a project management tool or it probably won’t be very useful. So says our guest reviewer — one of Fast Company’s "Most Influential Women in Technology” — who went in search of PM software that "understood" her. Here, she shares some thoughts on the pros and cons of five affordable solutions she encountered along the way.
When it comes to choosing web-based project management software, there are plenty of options. In general, most tools offer the same core features: a dashboard view; to-do or task lists; a forum or discussion mechanism; a place to upload files; and admin tools to manage the environment. Most offer basic reporting capability at some level, and many of today’ solutions also feature an impressive integration of communications tools such as email, text messaging, RSS feeds, online and desktop calendaring systems — even Twitter.
So, while you might pick one project management solution over another based on a particular feature, more often than not you are looking for something that feels “right” and presents the information you need in formats that work for you.
You’ll probably want your new project management software to be secure and scalable as your organization changes. You’ll definitely want it to be affordable.
