PMI to Fund Six Research Projects in 2009

Research projects include Governance and Communities of PMOs, Early Warning Signs in Complex Projects, and Best Industry Outcomes.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) will sponsor and fund six new academic research projects in 2009, focusing on such areas as governance of project management offices, early warning signs on complex projects, and project portfolio change management in dynamic environments. The PMI Research Program, formed in 1997 “to advance the discipline and profession of project management,” chose this year’s research projects from a pool of more than 60 proposals submitted in 2008.

Here is a brief description of the six sponsored projects, including the lead researchers on each.

1. Governance and Communities of PMOs

This research project seeks to provide an integrated model of PMO networks within large organizations. The model will help practitioners and senior managers to pursue existing approaches, and to articulate new strategies and structures for the delivery of optimal project management value.
