An on-demand collaboration solution is helping a number of PMI chapters improve the virtual production of their membership newsletters, connecting dispersed volunteer editors and writers through a shared workspace that includes wiki pages and discussion threads.
Garry Booker, director of communications for Project Management Institute’s Tulsa, Oklahoma chapter, was simply seeking to facilitate virtual communication with the Oklahoma City chapter when the two offices launched the newsletter Project Landscape last fall. What he got after implementing a web-based collaboration tool from Central Desktop was an added bonus.
After a trial in November and December, the tool was introduced to other PMI chapters in Region 6, which includes Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Kansas and Missouri. “There are 20 or so chapters in the region and, so far, 13 have signed up to join this collaboration,” Booker says. “We went from a couple thousand readers to 25,000 readers in just six months, and it’s because we can work as a virtual team. It’s been successful beyond our wildest dreams.”
