When Beijing-based I.T. United took on a data migration project for Texas-based Dell, systemized communication became a top priority to coordinate the work. To overcome geographic and time zone gaps, both sides needed to maintain parallel environments — and expectations. In the process, a long-term partnership has formed.

Dell looked far and wide to find a partner to consolidate and globalize its global database management system. The project would involve customer-facing and internal applications for sales, marketing and order management, with scalability and reliability a priority. A review of vendors led Dell to outsource the project to a software development and services firm in Beijing called I.T. United. The arrangement would significantly cuts costs, but the parties needed to develop an “engagement model” for coping with the challenges rooted in outsourcing, especially communicating across a great distance.
 
The companies started their partnership in 2005. The project scope included DBMS migration from Microsoft SQL Server to Oracle 10G, data model consolidation, PL/SQL generation and automated tools in C# and .NET. Oracle 10G boasts, among other advantages, increased scalability as it can work on all hardware platforms, from single processor and mid-range multiprocessor systems to large scale SMP, MPP, mainframe and clustered environments.
