Elizabeth Harrin   (February 7, 2008)

Projects@Work chats with the United Kingdom’s Project Manager of the Year, whose team successfully executed a complex, three-year IT initiative involving seven highly dependent, interrelated projects that required “radical business change management” and delivered significant, ongoing financial benefits to the national postal service.

At a recent IT industry event in London, The British Computer Society named Sue Harding as Project Manager of the Year in the United Kingdom, recognizing her Change and Information Systems team’s success in managing the delivery of a “transformational program” at Post Office Ltd., a brand of Royal Mail, the national postal service in the U.K.

Known as the Impact Programme, the complex, three-year initiative involved seven highly dependent, interrelated projects encompassing both substantial IT system development and radical business change. When all was said and done, the program had fundamentally re-engineered and simplified an accounting process that had been in place for more than 140 years across 15,000 branches, delivering significant, ongoing financial benefits at a time when the business was losing money. In bringing the financial systems into line with industry standards, about 70,000 workers learned new daily processes.

ProjectsAtWork.com editorial board member Elizabeth Harrin chatted with Harding about the project and her path to Project Manager of the Year.

How long have you been a project manager?
The Impact Programme was my first program management role.
