The Project+ Test
Projects@Work   (December 6, 2007)

You are leading a project with multiple customers that is in the planning stage. You receive an unclear written statement of the project purpose and objectives. What is your next step? This is one of 10 sample questions from the CompTIA Project+ exam, presented here for your consideration.

CompTIA Project+ is a globally recognized project management certification that provides validation of fundamental project management skills and the ability to apply these skills in a business environment. Based on project management best practices, the 80-question, multiple-choice exam incorporates universal project management principles, and covers critical soft skills such as conflict resolution, negotiation, communication, team-building/leadership, and setting and managing expectations. CompTIA Project+ also provides a common terminology to help project managers and team participants build a project management culture within their organizations.

About one-quarter of people who take the 90-minute exam have less than one year of project management experience, and more than half have less than two years experience, according to a CompTIA survey conducted in September 2007. Only about 14 percent of Project+ certification holders also have a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, although 34 percent said they intend to pursue a PMP in the next 18 months.

The exam covers four general project areas: initiation and scope definition (20 percent); planning (40 percent); execution, control and coordination (43 percent); and closure, acceptance and support (7 percent).
