Federal project management is getting better (or worse) … two-thirds of CIOs say they have 'project manager’ somewhere on their resumes … and the pace of consolidation in the IT services space continues to gather steam. An occasional by-the-numbers look at project management-related trends.
The number of federal information technology projects identified as “high risk” has grown by more than 125 since February, but that’s not necessarily bad news according to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), which says that better oversight and reporting practices are shining a spotlight on projects in need of special attention. Yet a new survey shows that while 80 percent of federal managers say their management systems are meeting basic requirements, 69 percent acknowledge that only one out of five projects finish on budget and on time. Go figure, indeed.
“When you look at the macro level, managers think that everything is fine, but when you get into more specific questions, people tend to answer [based on] how it applies to them,” said Margo Visitacion, industry market manager of public-sector aerospace and defense at Primavera, which conducted the online survey. “Feedback from government managers reveals significant contradictions.
