The market for web-based project management solutions continues to rapidly expand, with a wide range of offerings for every budget and requirement set. There really is no good reason for strategic initiatives to be handcuffed by non-collaborative tools when web-enabled options can make project teams dramatically more efficient and productive.
Many of the Fortune 500 companies have established a project management office (PMO) as a unique business unit that oversees and manages their strategic initiatives across the enterprise. However, most mid-market and smaller organizations have yet to implement enterprise project management. Most project managers are still managing projects with Microsoft Project, Excel, email or even “sticky notes.”
The biggest problem and challenge with these tools is that project management is a team effort, not an individual effort. Common desktop applications are intended for individual use, and not inherently collaborative, leading to workaround methods for sharing project information in desktop applications such as emailing files or posting them on a shared network. The issue with emailing the file around is version control. Too many times project managers are conversing with project sponsors about the project status only to find 20 minutes into the discussion they are viewing two different versions of the same project.
