Filling the PM Skill Gap
Projects@Work   (April 16, 2007)

Organizations have struggled with a shortage of project management skills for years, but traditional methods to fill the gap continue to fall short, according to a new report from Forrester Research, which concludes that IT executives need a project-driven culture more than tools and training.

Forrester Research has provided ProjectsAtWork with an executive summary of “Trends 2007: Hot IT Skill Areas” by Samuel Bright with Alex Cullen, Phil Murphy, Jean-Pierre Garbani and Lauren Sessions. Excerpts follow. For more on this report, including charts, endnotes and complete results, visit www.forrester.com.

According to a November 2006 survey of 281 IT decision-makers, IT professionals with project management, security and architecture skills will be targeted for recruiting in 2007. Change management, service management, and vendor management will be training priorities within enterprise IT. The more routine aspects of network management will be outsourced along with packaged app support and app maintenance. Industry differences will guide skills sourcing decisions, and interpersonal skills will be very important across the board in IT hiring decisions.
