Systems Engineer in the PM House

The principles and best practices of systems engineering have a lot to offer to project management, particularly in the areas of upfront analysis, requirements gathering and integration. So says Dennis Van Gemert, who has real-world experience and master’s degrees in both disciplines. Now he’s preaching what he practices to project and product managers in a unique course at the University of California, Irvine.

As an aerospace engineer and a certified Project Management Professional, Dennis Van Gemert saw a lot of synergy between the two disciplines. The best practices of systems engineering could easily be applied with great effect by project managers working in the commercial sector, he thought. So he decided to teach a highly tailored course on the topic through the extension program at the University of California, Irvine, which offers a project management certificate program. “Systems Engineering for Project and Program Managers” is being offered this spring as an elective course through the extension program.
