There is no one right way to use a project management solution. Personal preferences and work habits will influence which features are indispensable and which are ignored. Here, a seasoned practitioner shares some suggestions for using (or bypassing) Microsoft Project 2007 on a complex software implementation project.
This is the second in a series of articles reviewing the new capabilities in Microsoft Office Project 2007, Project Server and Project Portfolio Server, and exploring their application on real-world projects.
There is no one right way to use a project management solution, and individual preferences, habits and techniques will greatly influence which features become indispensable favorites and which just get in the way. That said, here are some step-by-step suggestions for using Microsoft Office Project 2007 in the context of a recent implementation of an enterprise compliant document and process management solution at a multinational pharmaceutical manufacturer on behalf of an Irish software company. The software supplier’s proposal was based on two products: (1) a document management package that might require some enhancement to meet the customer’s requirements, and (2) a process management package that wasn’t yet developed. Both products were to be implemented at a number of the manufacturer’s sites around the world.
In putting together the proposal document with the supplier, Project can provide a quick, effective way to produce a simple overview of a typical implementation.
