PPM Solutions: 2006 In Review

Organizations seeking to implement project portfolio management tools and practices are presented with a wider variety of choices than ever before, including new and revamped solutions from software giants, niche veterans and on-demand players. Here’s a year-end review of the strengths and weaknesses of some of the main PPM offerings.
As more organizations recognize the value of project portfolio management (PPM) in aligning their initiatives and investments with business objectives, PPM methodologies and tool sets are moving to the top of more companies’ technology shopping lists. As a result, 2006 was a busy year in the PPM marketplace, with a number of significant acquisitions, including major moves by Microsoft and Primavera, the two leading project management vendors. The year also witnessed software giants IBM and Oracle claiming a piece of PPM real estate, renewed focus of seasoned niche providers such as Planview, and the emergence of software-as-a-service players such as eProject. Organizations seeking to adopt PPM practices and solutions are now presented with a wider variety of tool sets from than ever before, and understanding the diverse PPM landscape is not a simple task. With that in mind, here’s an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the main PPM vendors in 2006.
