Process Maturity Matters

An organizational project management study demonstrates the clearest link yet between improvements in project management capabilities and effective project delivery. But most organizations still have a long way to go in developing a consistent approach to managing all their projects.

Projects managed with more mature processes are more likely to deliver on schedule and match resource estimates, according to results of the latest Organizational Project Management (OPM) Baseline Study conducted by Interthink Consulting. One of the largest benchmarking efforts of its kind, the annual study, now in its seventh year, provides insights into what practices are having the greatest impact on improving project capabilities within organizations.
 
Demonstration of a link between the maturity by which a project is managed and its ability to reliably meet expectations is significant, according to Interthink president Mark Mullaly. "This is one of the few research studies yet to have done so, providing valuable support for organizations striving to make a case for improving their project management practices. Equally significant is that while this link does exist, it only has some influence today on how organizations choose to manage their projects. Most, regardless of size, show very little variation in how they choose to manage their projects.
