By recognizing IT as a business partner in meeting customer needs and contributing to the bottomline, organizations are realizing greater value from their technology projects.
Over the past 10 years the greatest challenges for IT management have been to deliver high value to the business and to align IT initiatives with business strategy. One of the approaches that has proven the most successful is to manage IT as a "business within the business." In businesses that have succeeded with this approach, the IT organization has been recognized as a partner with the rest of the business in meeting the needs of customers and contributing to profitability and success.
Managing IT as a business requires three capabilities: strong governance, effective metrics and discipline to deliver value. This approach also requires skills that until recently have not been widespread in IT departments. IT is typically one of the highest expenditures in a business, yet it rarely demonstrates the ROI or value of technology investments to stakeholders.
Good IT governance builds and reinforces the partnership between the IT organization and the rest of the business.
