Women have come into their own in project management, entering the field twice as fast as men in recent years. But they still must find ways to compete, network and assimilate in male-dominated sectors. Pay inequality, lack of access to upper-management and the tug of family obligations can be barriers to success.
Studies show that women have made great strides in project management in the last dozen years, particularly as technology has come to dominate the job and expanded it past the traditional realms of construction, defense and engineering. In the United States, almost twice as many women as men joined the Project Management Institute in 2000 through 2002, according to a 2003 survey by PMI, although men outnumbered women two to one in the overall international membership.
"Project management is one of the most significant areas of growth for women. There's a need for understanding how communication works with team development and leadership. If there's an area where women can excel, it's this one," says Beth Saltmarsh, an adjunct professor teaching project management at DePaulUniversity in Illinois.
Despite advances in entering male-dominated fields like information technology and engineering, and their comfort with male students and later coworkers, most females who have become successful in project management say it's their traditional "female skills" that are valued on the job.
