In the midst of a well-documented restructuring, Sun Microsystems knew its long-term relevance would depend on new product releases. And in one division, a two-year-old PMO is playing a lead role, helping to deliver a holistic, realistic view of new product development programs. In fact, the PMO has come to be called the Ministry of Truth.

Sun Microsystems has been a leader in network computing for two decades, from its widely adopted Java technology to turnkey enterprise storage solutions. Based in Santa Clara, Calif., Sun made news this month with the introduction of Solaris 10, the latest version of its well-known operating system. The release is part of campaign to show customers that Sun has come through a massive restructuring — including a 27-percent reduction of its workforce — stronger and better equipped to meet their complex technological needs.
 
Behind the scenes, Sun's restructuring has largely focused on how it develops and brings to market the products that will determine its future relevance in the field. And a key component of the transformation in the Network Storage Group is a two-year-old program management office (PMO) that has come to be called the Ministry of Truth within the organization.
