To Bleed or Not to Bleed

Making a decision to take on a project employing bleeding-edge technology is a big gamble with potentially big rewards. The list of failures is long; the successes can be spectacular. Here are some questions to ask when considering if the latest and greatest technology may be right on your project.
The use of the phrase “bleeding edge technology” often brings a knowing chuckle to people in the project management field, especially IT folks. People in the IT community know of too many times that we have slipped past the leading edge of technology onto the bleeding edge and suffered for it. But the breakthroughs and successes have been legendary.
For readers unfamiliar with the term, bleeding edge technology refers to new and unproven technology that presents the risk of reductions in stability and productivity in hopes of achieving a great breakthrough. It may be technology that is still being developed, and may cause problems because it has not been fully tested or contains bugs. It can also be cost-prohibitive. Managing projects on the bleeding edge can end up being a difficult, unpleasant, expensive and painful experience.
We’ll get back to bleeding edge in a moment, but we need to look at some related terms that may help put levels of technology in perspective.
